Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery method in which the shape and size of the nose is changed. This surgery also provides functional intervention in patients with nasal congestion, and aims to obtain noses that allow patients to breathe more easily and have an aesthetic appearance after the surgery.
The surgery can be performed by closed or open method. These two methods are not superior to each other, similar results are obtained in the long term. The decision is made according to the surgeon’s preference and the patient’s suitability. In our surgeries, we generally prefer the open technique in patients with severe traumatic bone-cartilage curvature, while we generally prefer the closed method in less traumatic, non-curved noses. While shaping the bone in the surgery, we use the Piezo tool, which is an ultrasonic cutting tool, rather than breaking it. Thanks to this device, there is almost no edema or bruising after the surgery.
After deciding on nose surgery, the most important step is to exchange ideas with the patient and evaluate the expectations and possible results. The patient should be informed in detail about possible and unlikely situations after surgery. In our clinic, we arrange a pre-operative meeting with the patient and have a meeting for approximately 1 hour about the patient’s expectations, what we can do, complications that may occur due to the nature of the surgery, and the management of these situations.
The recovery process continues for 1 year. This process varies depending on the nose structure, skin condition and healing potential of the tissues. After nose surgery, the desired result may not be achieved in 5-10% of patients, and a repeat operation can be planned after waiting at least 6 months.
